The Miss Universe pageant, first held in the United States in 1952, has sparked debate over whether it invites discrimination because of rules that bar married, divorced or childbearing women from participating.

In some countries, competition rules are even stricter. For example, in 2018, Ukrainian organizations stripped Veronika Didusenko of her title and crown after she revealed that she was divorced and had a child. The event sparked a campaign to change the rules of the world’s four major beauty pageants, including Miss Universe. “I believe that women should have the freedom to choose to do what they want with their lives, regardless of their marital status, age, race and sexual orientation,” Didusenko said in a post on Instagram.

The Miss Universe organization changed some rules this year after transgender Anne Jakrajutathipa bought Miss Universe 2022 through her company JKN Global Group. The 72nd Miss Universe pageant will feature two transgender women for the first time, with Guatemalan representative Michelle Cohen becoming the first married woman with children to compete.
